According to Festival Crossroads, an intersection is something special. A place where lines cross. Where roads come together and leave again. They lead to conflict or meeting. And according to a musical myth, the blues festival finds its origin at a crossroads.
“A crossroads is an icon of the blues,” Johan Kleine explains. Kleine is one of the organizers of the Crossroads festival in Assen. “That icon originated from the legend of Robert Johnson. He died at the age of 27 by drinking poisoned whiskey, but he has become famous for the story that he sold his soul on the Crossroads, in exchange for musical genius. He became a gigantically good guitar player.”
The intersection is therefore important at the festival. That is why the organization hopes to receive many photos through a photo competition about intersections. And day you can interpret broadly, says photographer and jury member Harry Cock.
“There are all kinds of crossings. From abstract crossings to beautiful landscape crossings. From ugly specimens to crossings that happen to things. Things that have something to do with crossings, it doesn’t matter. If we finally feel that it is about a cross.”
The second edition of the Blues Festival will be in the agenda on 26 September in the Nieuwe Kolk in Assen. Both Dutch bands and American blues artists are on the program. The seven best photographers get free tickets and their photos are exhibited during the festival. The winner will also receive a cash prize.
