At the age of seven he entered the fencing center in Purmerend. He was the only youth member and had to compete and lose against adults. But he was immediately sold. “I really couldn’t leave it anymore,” he says.
And that is noticeable. Eight years later, with many international competitions to his name, Cas goes to the European Championship in Georgia on behalf of the Netherlands. His coaches Daniël and Arash prepare the talent. But what makes Cas so good?
“He’s not super tall, so he mainly depends on his intelligence,” Daniël explains. “And if I still fence with him, I don’t have a chance anymore”
Cas will be on the carpet on February 21 to compete against other so-called sabreurs. According to Cas and Daniel, the greatest dangers come from Hungary, Bulgaria and Italy. But maybe the cup will go to Purmerend this year. “I hope so!”, Cas laughs.
