Felix Magath comes into play as Walter’s successor

Hamburger SV is looking for a new head coach after Tim Walter was fired. In Felix Magath, a prominent name at HSV has now brought himself into play.

“You shouldn’t rule anything out,” said long-time Bundesliga coach Felix Magath in an interview with “Sky” when he was asked about a possible commitment to his former club Hamburger SV: “You should approach problems openly. In this respect, I conclude Nothing wrong at the moment.”

According to the 70-year-old, Hamburger SV still has “the best players in a team in the second division.” He “still assumes that HSV will be promoted”.

As third in the table, the Rothosen actually have a good chance of the long-awaited promotion to the Bundesliga. Two points are missing after 21 games on Holstein Kiel, league leaders FC St. Pauli are five points ahead of their city rivals.

Although HSV remains promising in the race, doubts about Tim Walter have recently increased significantly. His players repeatedly played wild games; a more stable style of play could not be established. According to media reports, the support of the professionals has also decreased recently.

Magath can also imagine a DFB job

Tim Walter took over the northern club in the summer of 2021, and twice he failed in the promotion relegation with HSV. Felix Magath has been without a coaching job since the summer of 2022, when he took over Hertha BSC at short notice and saved them from relegation in the relegation games against HSV, which Walter coached.

The experienced Bundesliga coach, who once won the double twice in a row at FC Bayern (2005, 2006) and then sensationally won the championship with VfL Wolfsburg (2009), recently publicly declared that he would also support the DFB if his services should be required. The contract with national coach Julian Nagelsmann initially ends after the home European Championship.

“If I can help, then why shouldn’t I do that?” said Magath recently in the “Bild” podcast “Bayern-Insider”.

For the time being, Hamburger SV will be trained on an interim basis by previous assistant coach Merlin Polzin, as the club announced after Tim Walter was fired.
