He scored a goal, but didn’t think of himself at that moment. Instead, Federico Chiesa dedicated his goal to his late teammate.
He shot a goal and then moved with a gesture: after the 4: 2 (1: 0) home win against the AFC Bournemouth, Liverpools Federico Chiesa dedicated his goal to the late teammate Diogo Jota.
“My goal was a great moment for me – but my thoughts are at Diogo. That was his day here today,” said the Italian after the final whistle at the BBC. The offensive player had scored 3-2 in the 88th minute and brought the “Reds” to the winning road. With the goal he set a late sporting exclamation mark – the evening was already emotional for the fans in the stadium.
Before the kick -off, “You’ll Never Walk Alone” was started – accompanied by a minute’s silence. The fans honored Jota with a moving choreography in two stands: the lettering “DJ20” and “AS30” recalled the Portuguese international and his brother André Silva. Both died in a car accident in Spain in early July.
Even during the game, the memory of Jota was omnipresent. “The feeling that the fans gave me when they sang with Diogo’s song throughout the game was very moving for me,” said Chiesa. The family of the late Liverpool professional followed the game in the stadium.
