Federal government frees up money for reconstruction workshop detention center Saint-Hubert | Inland

The federal government has released money for the rapid reconstruction of the joinery workshop of the Saint-Hubert detention center. That building was hit by a fire on May 15. State Secretary Mathieu Michel, responsible for the Buildings Agency, has announced this.

In the fire of 15 May, two wings of the building were reduced to ashes. Urgent works have already been carried out to protect the communal roofs and to secure the electrical installations.

The aim is to tear down and rebuild the infrastructure destroyed by the fire as soon as the judicial investigation is complete. For its part, the FPS Justice is taking the necessary steps to replace all machine tools in the joinery workshop.

It is estimated that 2.5 to 3 million euros will be needed for the reconstruction. The Council of Ministers gave the green light last Friday to release the necessary money.

“It is very important to put inmates to work, with a view to their reintegration and learning through work. This is especially the case in Saint-Hubert, where the prison regime is organized around prison work. Inmates living in this workshop work, come out with an education and a non-negligible knowledge that can be beneficial for their reintegration,” explains State Secretary Michel.
