FC Volendam win sets club record: unbeaten 22 matches in a row

FC Volendam has set a club record richer. Wim Jonk’s team won 2-0 against Jong FC Utrecht tonight and has not lost 22 matches so far. Gaetano Oristanio and Bilal Ould-Chikh scored the goals at De Dijk, under the watchful eye of about 2,000 spectators.

The visitors from Utrecht were not involved in Volendam. Within 35 minutes the game was actually already decided. The opening goal was scored by Italian midfielder Oristanio. He simply tapped in after a free kick by Robert Mühren via goalkeeper Thijmen Nijhuis.

After Mühren shot over after a good cross by Daryl van Mieghem, it was Bilal Ould-Chikh who made it 2-0. Good disruptive work by Boy Deul resulted in possession of the ball, after which Mühren put the ball ready for Ould-Chikh. The winger scored with a dry bang on his home debut.

Lesser second half does not bother Volendam

FC Volendam then had a hard time at the start of the second half. Mees Rijks had the connecting goal on his shoe. He squeezed past the defense and appeared to score, but hit the outside of the post from close range. Volendam also hit the woodwork via Bilal Ould-Chikh after the break.

In the last twenty minutes Volendam played the match professionally. As a result, breaking the club record was never in danger. 52 years ago the eel farmers were unbeaten in the first division for 21 games in a row. At the time, FC Volendam was promoted to the Eredivisie and that is what it looks like now. The leader has ten points of clearance on ADO Den Haag, the closest competitor for promotion. FC Emmen, which is second, has four points less than Volendam.

FC Volendam line-up: Stankovic; Douiri (Kramer/78), Mirani, Benamar, Flint (James/62); Oristanio, W. Ould-Chikh, Deul (Twigt/62); B. Ould-Chikh (Johnson/78), Muhren, Van Mieghem
