FC Volendam lets PSV escape in an entertaining match

FC Volendam had enough opportunities to hurt PSV. Nevertheless, the entertaining duel at the Dijk ended in 2-3. Xavier Mbuyamba and Daryl van Mieghem scored the goals, but it was not enough.

After a lackluster start, Xavi Simons handed out the first pinprick. The PSV attacker lashed out from the edge of the box and saw the ball go just over. The people of Eindhoven had the upper hand, but they were not given great opportunities. Henk Veerman had the opening goal on his shoe from a cross from Derry John Murkin. The tall striker, however, went well wide.

That miss was fatal to Volendam moments later. After a good through ball from Joey Veerman, Guus Til went deep. He lost to Luuk de Jong, who could easily tap in: 0-1. Things went from bad to worse, as PSV quickly doubled their lead. Again Veerman was at the base. He gave a deep pass to Til and he completed it beautifully: 0-2. Daryl van Mieghem scored the connecting goal just before half-time, but the ball went well over the goal.

At the beginning of the second half, PSV loosened the strings a little more. Volendam therefore became dangerous via Gaetano Oristanio (solo) and Veerman (shot blocked). The team was paid for work after 55 minutes. A corner from Carel Eiting was headed hard into the goal by Xavier Mbuyamba: 1-2. That was his third goal of the season, all headers. The tension seemed to be completely back, until Til quickly headed his second goal behind Filip Stankovic.

Volendam did not give up hope and after a brilliant solo by Oristanio, Van Mieghem hit the mark: 2-3. Joey Veerman could have brought his team to a safe haven, but shot high from close range. In the counter-punch, Oristanio had the equalizer for the shot. Walter Benitez was able to stop him. Calvin Twigt shot just over. Volendam had enough opportunities to make it 3-3 without success. As a result, the game ended without points for the home team.

Due to the defeat, Volendam remains fourteenth in the Eredivisie. Competitors Excelsior and Vitesse won, so it remains unusually exciting in the battle for sixteenth place. FC Emmen is there at the moment and will play against Ajax from 8 p.m. Volendam will play against SC Cambuur next Friday.
