FC Volendam in safe haven for the time being after winning in cellar squatter

FC Volendam is finally in a safe fifteenth place after a win over FC Groningen. In an entertaining and goal-rich match, coach Wim Jonk’s team won 3-2. Gaetano Oristanio, Calvin Twigt and Robert Mühren scored for the home team.

FC Volendam celebrates after a goal by Oristanio

In the cold Volendam stadium, both teams started the game cautiously and tentatively. FC Volendam had most of the ball possession, but created no chances and the visitors occasionally came out dangerous via the counter. Nevertheless, FC Volendam took the lead. Gaetano Oristanio took full advantage of a defensive error by the Northerners. It was the Italian midfielder’s first goal of the season. The goal seemed to give the Palingboeren more confidence, because the preponderance increased afterwards.

Delicious action

For example, Derry John Murkin was able to double the lead after half an hour of play. On the back line, the left leg sent a number of Groningen into the woods with some beautiful passing movements, only goalkeeper Michael Verrips he did not pass.

Resilience from the North

With the same eleven players as in the first half, things did not go well at FC Volendam shortly after the break. At the first corner for FC Groningen it was already hit. The ball got stuck just in front of the goal and Johan Hove of FC Groningen rammed the ball against the ropes from close by.

Nevertheless, the home team quickly came up with an answer. Calvin Twigt headed in a cross from the right by Florent Sanchez in the 55th minute. And that lead was well deserved. The game was then largely in the half of FC Groningen. Against the odds, the visitors scored from one of the few counter-attacks via Ricardo Pepi.

Stadium upside down

The final phase was especially exciting. Where FC Volendam kept looking for the attack. After fifteen minutes, the ball reached the far post for Robert Mühren. The attacker tapped in the ball and completely turned the stadium upside down. It was Mühren’s fifth goal this season.

How bad FC Volendam was in the winter break, that’s how rosy the world of Wim Jonk and his friends looks now. Thanks to the win, the team from Volendam is now in a safe fifteenth place. Next Saturday, FC Volendam will receive neighbor AZ in-house.
