FC Volendam can close hands with a point in the basement duel

The relegation cracker Vitesse – FC Volendam ended 1-1. And that doesn’t help the Eel farmers much. Yet they can be happy with that, because the Arnhem team shot three times on the crossbar of the Volendam goal.

A very interesting relegation battle developed from the kick-off in the Arnhem tuber garden. The effort was not the fault of either team. With Robert Mühren as the lone striker up front, FC Volendam mainly lurked on the counter. And it turned out great after just a few minutes.

Happiness

Bilal Ould-Chikh picked up the ball on the halfway line and after a long dribble, a false kick and a placed shot, the technician made it 0-1. There was great joy for the away section, with around five hundred fans from the fishing village traveling along.

FC Volendam could not enjoy the lead for long. In the sixth minute it was level again in the Gelredome. And that was mainly due to Mio Backhaus. The German goalie made a serious blunder on a long shot from Mica Pinto.

After that it was often one-way traffic to the Volendam goal. The defenders, especially left back George Cox, could not get a grip on Anis Hadj-Moussa. The Vitesse winger was constantly threatening and came close to a goal several times. The French Algerian shot the crossbar in the twentieth minute.

Back on the bar

FC Volendam also had to thank the angel on the crossbar later in the first half. Carlens Arcus shot the ball onto the crossbar from a great distance. Although goalkeeper Backhaus’s hand was also worth its weight in gold.

The coaching duo of Regillio Simons and Michael Dingsdag made one change at halftime. The frantic Cox was allowed to stay behind in the locker room. Benaissa Benamar took his place. However, that did little to change the game image. Vitesse remained the pressing and threatening party.

Mexx Meerdink

For example, AZ mercenary Mexx Meerdink was given a fairly big opportunity on behalf of Vitesse at the start of the second half. The energetic striker shot over from close range. His teammates also had the necessary opportunities, but Backhaus proved to be a very difficult obstacle for the Arnhem team. The closing post thus somewhat obscured his mistake in the first half.

Offensively, FC Volendam rarely came close to the enemy penalty area. A few long shots posed a slight danger. In the last fifteen minutes, FC Volendam again had no shortage of luck, as the home team again hit the crossbar during a scrimmage.
