FC Twente imposes a stadium ban on 28 supporters because of riots against Hammarby IF

FC Twente has immediately imposed a stadium ban on 28 people following the riots that took place during the home match against Hammarby IF. That has the general director of the club Paul van der Kraan on Friday in a newsletter announced. A letter received by the 28 supporters states that they “may have engaged in serious misconduct”. The bans apply to home and away games and will remain in force until a final decision has been made in the case, which is being investigated by the police and the Public Prosecution Service.

The football club expects to hand out a few dozen more stadium bans when the investigation into the disturbances, which took place at the end of July, has been completed. In the match in the preliminary round of the Conference League against the Swedish Hammarby IF, members of the hard core of FC Twente broke out of their box and attacked sponsors and relations of the Swedish club who were sitting in the main stand. A man was injured. The ME had to be deployed to stifle the violence. FC Twente says it wants to recover the damage suffered from the persons concerned.

FC Twente also announced that it would not allow its own supporters under the away section at the upcoming European home match against the Turkish Fenerbahçe next Thursday. Against Hammarby IF, according to the club, it was “no fun” to sit under the away section: it “didn’t feel safe”. Supporters below the away section are assigned a different place, leaving the boxes under the Fenerbahçe fans empty. After Hammarby IF, FC Twente also eliminated Riga FC, so that it will compete with Fenerbahçe in the play-offs for a place in the main tournament of the Conference League.
