Timo Hübers is an undisputed regular in the center of defense at 1. FC Köln, but is only under contract until the end of the season. He could “very well imagine” an extension of his expiring working paper, said Hübers in an interview with the “Kölnische Rundschau”.

The 29-year-old explained: “I’ve been with the FC professionals for four and a half years now. There was the possibility of leaving the club in the past. Ultimately, the pendulum has always swung in favor of FC. I don’t think I’ve always expressed it so actively to the outside world, but: The club means a lot to me.”

Said El Mala is given a great honor. As the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Friday morning, the shooting star of 1. FC Cologne is one of this year’s recipients of the Fritz Walter Medal. This is awarded every season to the greatest talents of a year.

The winger received the silver medal in the U19 category. Gold goes to Stuttgart’s Finn Jeltsch, bronze to Hoffenheim’s Max Moerstedt. “I’m very pleased to have won the silver medal, that’s not a given,” says El Mala, already looking to the future: “On the one hand, it shows me that I’ve made good development, but more than that, it’s a sign and incentive for me to keep going and not rest on my laurels.”

Said El Mala is currently on everyone’s lips in football Germany. Only Lukas Kwasniok acted surprised when he was asked about the 19-year-old at the press conference before the game against FC Augsburg on Thursday. “I didn’t notice any hype about Said,” said the coach with a smile. Before the international break, El Mala was in the starting line-up for the first time for FC against TSG Hoffenheim – and promptly scored the goal in a 1-0 win.

For Kwasniok, however, this does not mean that the attacker will be on the pitch from the start against Augsburg. “Just because someone scores a goal doesn’t mean they’ll automatically start in the future,” said the coach. On the one hand it’s about using “the flow”, but on the other hand you also have to protect the player. The 44-year-old continued: “I know that this is very difficult for all of you to accept – but the boy is 19 years old and has now played three games within a week, at Bundesliga and U21 level.”
