FC St. Pauli’s race to catch up continues

FC St. Pauli continued its race to catch up in the 2nd Bundesliga on the 24th matchday.

Hamburg celebrated their seventh win in a row under new coach Fabian Hürzeler with a 2-1 (1-1) win over SpVgg Greuther Fürth, but are still eight points behind relegation place three, which 1. FC Heidenheim occupies.

The guests were outnumbered from the 45th minute and were unable to compensate for the handicap in the second half. Ragnar Ache (6th) had shot the cloverleaf in front, but Manolis Saliakas (13th) equalized for the Millerntor team.

Before that, the North Germans were lucky that the video referee refused to recognize Ache’s 0:2 (10th). He was just offside and the goal was rightly disallowed. In the 45th minute, the Gideon Jung from Fürth lost due to an emergency brake and a red card. Oladapo Afolayan (55th) used a chain of errors in the Franks’ defense to make it 2-1 for the St. Paulians.

Fürth showed the more pleasing structure of the game over long stretches. Time and time again, the Franks let the ball and their opponents run, and the hosts often got into trouble. However, the Fürthers were negligent with their chances to score. In addition, individual errors led to the goals of the home side at Millerntor.
