Completely crazy DFB Cup game in Hamburg: FC St. Pauli beat TSG Hoffenheim 8-7 on penalties in the second round in front of their home crowd. 18 shooters walked to the point. In the end, TSG professional Albian Hajdari lost his nerve at the crucial moment. Teammates Andrej Kramarić and St. Pauli’s Mathias Pereira Lage had also missed beforehand. Of all people, these two players were successful for their teams in extra time.
After 120 minutes the score was 2:2. Hauke Wahl took the lead for the home team after just one minute. Hoffenheim equalized directly after the break through Grischa Prömel (47th minute). In extra time, Kramarić scored after a controversial hand penalty (107′). Pereira Lage made the Millerntor Stadium tremble seconds before the final whistle when he scored the celebrated equalizer (120+2).
The hosts got off to a lightning start: After Joel Fujita’s shot was blocked, Wahl took the early lead from the following corner. Just 44 seconds had been played. Hoffenheim tried to shake off the shock and get the game under control. But St. Pauli remained dangerous with counterattacks.
After the break, the guests got off to a better start: after a corner from Andrej Kramarić, Prömel headed in to make it 1-1. Hoffenheim was now much more focused and committed and hardly allowed St. Pauli to get a chance. But there were no real clear chances to score.
On the other side, Bernardo made a desperate save on the line after an artistic shot from substitute Abdoulie Ceesay (84′). Then Pauli keeper Ben Voll tipped the ball off Hoffenheim’s Ihlas Bebou’s foot (89′).
In extra time, Wouter Burger hit the crossbar for TSG (98th). Kramarić scored with a controversial hand penalty to give Hoffenheim the lead. The ball hit Sands on his arm as he turned to the side. But Matias Pereira Lage forced the penalty shootout.
