After a burst change in 2020
The Royal Blues simply took too much time with the personal details, and an offer from Berlin that was (“significantly”) better for the goalkeeper personally was the decisive factor in his decision, it was said in the summer of 2020 as part of the change that was surprising to many at the time by Alexander Schwolow from SC Freiburg to Hertha BSC. Around two years and 54 Bundesliga appearances in the jersey of the capital club later, the 30-year-old arrived at FC Schalke 04, who were already favored at the time, albeit on loan. In an interview with the “WAZ“The keeper now gave an insight into the failed change two years ago and spoke about his ambitions with the new club.
“I had even looked for apartments, contacted goalkeeping coach Simon Henzler,” reports the native of Wiesbaden, who is now one of a total of eleven newcomers (including permanent commitments after loans) to the Bundesliga promoted team, about that time. The change failed primarily because of the transfer demands, which the “squires” did not want to or could not raise financially. For the sum of around 7 million euros, it went to Hertha instead. “In football, as a player, you are sometimes dependent on clubs,” sums up Schwolow. His contract on the Spree runs until 2025, but after just the first week of training the goalkeeper says about his new sporting home: “I’m excited about the whole club.”

The goalkeeper was signed by FC Schalke after the departure of Martin Fraisl under the clear premise of installing a new number one between the posts who does not need any adjustment time in the Bundesliga. Schwolow, who was not consistently able to repeat his sporting best time in the SC Freiburg jersey at Hertha and even lost his regular place in the meantime, comes with the experience of 174 games in the upper house. The right-footer doesn’t feel any pressure when it comes to his new role: “I’ve had to deal with a lot of difficult situations, especially in the past year or two. Nothing knocks me out anymore.”

FC Schalke 04: No purchase option in goalkeeper Schwolow’s contract
Schwolow currently does not want to look too far into the future and to the fact that there is no purchase option integrated into the loan agreement between Hertha and S04. “Of course you want to be able to plan longer, but you have to take the chance you get. It’s a very big opportunity to start as number one at such a big club. That cannot be taken for granted.”
As a newcomer, he benefits from “joining such a solid squad to be able to continue writing the success story.” In order for it to be such, FC Schalke 04 must be relegated after 34 matchdays – a task that Schwolow is tackling with confidence: “I have enough experience, experienced many relegation battles with Freiburg and Hertha. (…) It can be assumed that it will be a competitive season. There are so many teams with a lot of quality that I’m already asking myself: Which of the teams should go down at all? We’ll give everything that it’s not us.”
