FC Nantes uses joker transfer: Fabien Centonze comes from FC Metz

Back to Ligue 1

Now it has worked out: Fabien Centonze is moving from Ligue 1 relegated FC Metz back to the French top flight to FC Nantes. The 26-year-old signed a contract in the port city until 2027. Nantes used a so-called “joker” to sign the right-back after the end of the transfer window.

Paragraph 213 of the regulations of the French football association FFF states that clubs from Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 may also sign a “joker” in addition to contractless professionals. A player may be transferred within the leagues between the end of the summer transfer window (September 1) and the start of the winter transfer window (January 1, 2023).

The clubs had already held talks about Centonze in August, but they had not led to a positive result. Metz did not want to agree to a loan with an option to buy, preferring a fixed transfer. This came about at the second attempt and is said to bring in a transfer fee of 4 million euros for the second division club.
