Joey Jones was the first Welsher to win a European Cup. Now the former international and Liverpool professional has died.

Former Welsh international Joey Jones is dead. He died at the age of 70. This was announced by the Welsh club AFC Wrexham on its homepage. The club said that Jones had died “after a fight against an illness”.

Jones not only made a name for himself as a player of the Welsh club, but also wrote international history: in 1977 he was the first Welsh winner in the European Cup. With the Liverpool FC, he won the final against Borussia Mönchengladbach 3-1. A year later he defended the title with the “Reds”.

“We are deeply sad about the death of Joey Jones at the age of 70,” FC Liverpool wrote on the platform X. The Welsh Association also said: Joey Jones will be remembered as an icon that had shaped an entire generation of fans in Liverpool, Wrexham and all of Wales.

In eleven years, Jones played 72 caps for Wales. After his end of his career in 1992, he worked as a coach at the AFC Wrexham and was also used as a manager at times.

The club wrote that one was “destroyed” when one found out about the death of the former player. The thoughts are with his family, his friends and former colleagues. Wrexham praised Jones as a “true clutor on and next to the field”, which was open to everyone.
