By changes to the articles of association of the FC Emmen foundation, the municipality of Emmen is no longer responsible for appointing board members. As a result, the foundation itself can appoint new members without approval from the municipality.
The municipality still has the right to use and, if necessary, to intervene when there is (foreign) interference within the club. This means that – should there be a rich oil sheik to Southeast Drenthe who wants to take over the majority of the shares – the municipality is involved.
In January of this year, chairman Herman Harms gave up RTV Drenthe to change the articles of association before 1 April.
With this change, the municipality wants to guarantee the ‘independence and continuity of FC Emmen’, a letter to its own council can be read. The fact that the municipality previously had to give a blow to the appointment of new board members had been forgotten for a while at the town hall. Currently, board members can stay on for nine years, but Harms previously indicated that he wanted to think about that period.
