After FC Bayern remained unbeaten in the last away game of the season, Manuel Neuer knew who the Munich team had to thank. The world champion goalkeeper, who was taking a break this time after his Champions League dream was broken, ran straight to his representative Jonas Urbig and congratulated the 22-year-old on his next great performance in the Bundesliga.
“I was very happy about that,” said Urbig, who saved the German champions from falling behind in the 1-0 (0-0) win against relegation-threatened VfL Wolfsburg in the first half with numerous world-class saves. “Jonas did a great job again today,” said sports director Christoph Freund.
Urbig represented the 40-year-old Neuer for the 13th time in this Bundesliga season. The youngster has also been between the posts in the Champions League and the DFB Cup this season, replacing Neuer. Will he soon follow in his footsteps in the national team? Of all German goalkeepers, only Freiburg’s Noah Atubolu has a higher market value than Urbig, which is 15 million euros.
With his gala performance in Wolfsburg, Urbig collected further plus points in the race for a place in the squad for the World Cup this summer. Back in March, national coach Julian Nagelsmann nominated Urbig for the two test matches in Switzerland and against Ghana. The keeper had to leave again due to an injury.
Urbig hasn’t made any plans for the summer yet and he wouldn’t turn away a call from the national coach. “I generally like to answer the phone, no matter who is calling,” said the Bayern goalkeeper with a smile. “The World Cup is still a few weeks away. Until then we still have a home game against Cologne and the cup final – unfortunately not the Champions League final. Only then would I worry about it,” said Urbig.
Oliver Baumann and Alexander Nübel should definitely be there when Nagelsmann names his World Cup squad on May 21st. Urbig and Augsburg’s Finn Dahmen are vying for third place in the squad for the World Championship from June 11th to July 19th.
