FC Bayern’s chance for Christensen off the table? Agreement with FC Barcelona

Free transfer to Spain

Andreas Christensen was considered a hot candidate at FC Bayern Munich. However, the rumored salary demands of the central defender clouded the prospects of pursuing the Dane as a possible filler for central defense for the German record champions. Now the matter seems completely off the table.

At the beginning of the month, journalist Gerard Romero reported that Christensen, who only has a contract with Chelsea until the summer, will appear for FC Barcelona next season. There is already an almost complete agreement between the parties. The fact that the 25-year-old ex-Gladbacher could choose the Catalans for his free transfer has been a conceivable option for some time. Now several Spanish media are already reporting on an approaching signature. According to the “Sports“ Christensen has already completed part of his medical check-up. The second examination will follow on Monday before he signs a contract with Barcelona later this week. Most recently, it was said that the club had improved its offer again in the past week. It should be well above the rumored offer from FC Bayern.

“Sky” recently reported on extension talks in London that are likely to have failed over the long term, which fueled speculation about a Barça future for the currently most valuable central defender with an expiring contract. At Bayern, the club bosses are said to have been convinced of a Christensen commitment. However, the 54-time national player and Niklas Süle (26), who left after the season, are said to have demanded an annual salary of more than 10 million euros.

In addition to the central position in defence, Bayern also want to improve in defensive midfield in the summer, where Corentin Tolisso (27) could leave the club, and at the right back, and also top performers such as Robert Lewandowski (33), Thomas Müller (32), Manuel Neuer (35) and Serge Gnabry (26; all contracts end in 2023), an agreement of this magnitude seemed unlikely.

At Christensen you know what you are getting. An IV that was one of the best in the league when he was with Gladbach and was also good in Chelsea.
Schlotterbeck would therefore cost 5 million less (no matter how realistic the calculation is), but is playing well in its first season, the risk with such a transfer is enormous. Upa was also great, but he’s struggling with the pressure right now and I’m sure it would be the same with Schlotterbeck, so Christensen would probably be the better one, si…
