FC Bayern with a clear edge on the Super League verdict

The European Court of Justice cleared the way for the Super League with its ruling on Thursday. However, such a competition is still out of the question for FC Bayern.

“We have taken note of the judgment of the European Court of Justice. However, this does not change the attitude of FC Bayern and the attitude of the ECA that such a competition would represent an attack on the importance of the national leagues and the statics of European football.” said Bavaria’s CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen when asked by the “German Press Agency”.

“The Bundesliga forms the foundation of FC Bayern, just as all national leagues represent the foundation of European football clubs. That is why it is our duty and our deep conviction to strengthen it and not weaken it,” said the 56-year-old, who was next to him In addition to his role as Bayern boss, he is also Vice-Chairman of the European Club Association.

The German record champions cannot imagine leaving the Champions League either. “We also stand by the European club competitions under the umbrella of UEFA. So once again it’s very clear: the door for the Super League at FC Bayern remains closed,” emphasized Dreesen.

FC Bayern is not part of the Super League founders

The dispute over the founding of a Super League has preoccupied the European football world for years. In April 2021, twelve clubs from England, Italy and Spain officially founded such a project. FC Bayern was initially not there.

However, under pressure from UEFA and after threats of severe punishment, they backed down. The associations even flirted with excluding the breakaway clubs from the national league if the Super League actually came.

On Thursday, the European Court of Justice made a ruling on the question of whether UEFA and FIFA even have the power to prevent new competitions outside their control.

The judges in Luxembourg rejected this. The ECJ ruled that FIFA and UEFA may not make other competitions dependent on their approval and may not prohibit clubs and players from taking part in these competitions.

Otherwise, the large associations would abuse their dominant market position. However, this does not necessarily mean that the Super League has to be approved in its specific form, said the judges.
