FC Bayern: Tuchel surprised by Hernández’ PSG rumors – sobering conclusion of the season

FCB without a title in the league for the first time since 2012?

Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel reacted “surprised” to reports that Lucas Hernández was in talks with Paris Saint-Germain about a change. “I’ve noticed that there are headlines about Lucas. I don’t know if that’s true,” said Tuchel in Munich on Friday, adding: “What I can say is that he plays a prominent role in my plans, in the club’s plans. For me he is an absolute leader, I already said that – and that hasn’t changed.”

The defender, who signed four years ago for the record fee of 80 million euros from Atlético Madrid, is still under contract with the Munich team until June 30, 2024. For a long time, the club has been aiming for an early contract extension by three years until 2027 with Hernández, who has been out for months due to a cruciate ligament rupture. He is now training with the team again. But there will be no squad comeback at the end of the season in Cologne, said Tuchel. That would be “completely irresponsible”.

Bayern coach Tuchel: “There won’t be another season that we’re happy with”

Before the championship decision on Saturday, Tuchel did not try to stir up emotions with verbal challenges towards Borussia Dortmund. Rather, the 49-year-old looked realistically at the starting position before the last matchday, in which league leaders BVB are the clear favorites for the title. “We have to win – and then we need support,” said Tuchel and spoke of “a minimal chance”.

Bayern will only become German champions for the eleventh time in a row if they win at 1. FC Köln this Saturday (3:30 p.m. / Sky) with a two-point deficit and Dortmund do not defeat FSV Mainz 05 in their own stadium at the same time. “Anything can happen, in every game,” said Tuchel: “There just has to be a little inattentiveness. There can be red cards, penalties, set pieces, deficits, it can always happen.”

Nevertheless, there is “no news or predictions to BVB about what can happen to them. We have enough to do with ourselves. We’ve screwed up often enough. We have to win again and have to show a reaction from a low, how far too often”. Irrespective of the outcome of the last matchday, Tuchel drew a sobering conclusion about what may have been the first untitled Bayern season in the league since 2012. “It won’t be a season that we’re happy with, no matter how it ends in the end.”
