Basketball runners-up FC Bayern Munich has started its renewed attempt at the title with an unchallenged home win.
With his European Championship heroes Andreas Obst and Nick Weiler-Babb, coach Andrea Trinchieri’s team won the opening match of the new Bundesliga season against ratiopharm Ulm 87:80 (39:39).
After a weak second quarter, in which they gave up a 13-point lead, Munich had the game under control in the second half and maintained their lead throughout. “We did a decent job,” said Trinchieri at MagentaSport.
US newcomer Cassius Winston, who played 30 games in the NBA for the Washington Wizards, was Bayern’s most successful thrower with 25 points, most recently winning the championship in 2019. Weiler-Babb scored 18 points.
The Hamburg Towers, who had made defending champion Alba Berlin sweat at the start on Wednesday with a 78:81 win, celebrated their first win of the season in their own hall. In the 91:74 (52:32) against Syntainics MBC from Weißenfels, Kendale McCallum was the best thrower with 19 points.
The Telekom Baskets Bonn started the season with a sovereign 96:71 (53:35) at the Würzburg Baskets. With 22 points and seven assists, point guard TJ Shorts II was the outstanding player for the Rhinelanders, who led from the start.
