Former national coach Joachim Löw looked back on his career at the DFB, admitted that he should have taken his hat before, explained how he imagined his future and revealed how he convinced Jamal Musiala (FC Bayern) at the time, for the German National football team and not playing for England.

German football owes a lot to Joachim Löw, especially the 2014 World Cup title in Brazil. But also the fact that Jamal Musiala decided on the DFB team and has been wearing the jersey of the German national soccer team since the beginning of 2021 – and not that of the Three Lions – Löw can write on the flags.

As early as 2024, Löw had revealed that he attracted Musiala to participate in the EM 2020 (which took place in 2021 due to the Corona pandemic), now the former national coach, who was released after the tournament, has given even more precise insights.

Asked by the “kicker” what his Musiala conviction looked exactly, he said: “It was in Munich. We had spoken one or the other in advance, and before the European Championship 2021, Oliver Bierhoff and I then were with him. I give the only time in my coaching career to a player really early to be there. “

Unlike today, where Musiala deals the Bundesliga, he was “only a substitute at Bayern at the time, but his talent had already been seen,” Löw recalled. “We knew that he could be extremely important for the team of our country. So we had to tie it,” said the former national coach.

Löw: Musial’s mother had a large part

Musiala was “a little split”. The reason: “He also has friends in England, such as (Jew) Bellingham, with whom he played in the U21.”

But with the promise “in the last game in front of the European Championship and then at the tournament”, Musiala got around – and thanks to “his great mother, who was there and looked outside the box,” said Löw.

As at Mesut Özil or Ilkay Gündogan, who could also have played for the Turkish national team, it was “also said that Musiala has to choose what he is wearing in the heart,” added Löw.

Musiala then hardly played a role at the European Championship, and he only made his big breakthrough in the DFB team under Hansi Flick from 2022.

Löw about the future: there were already some offers

Löw has been without a new coaching job since the end of June 2021. That doesn’t bother the almost 65-year-old (February 3).

“I don’t have the pressure like a young coach, for whom things always have to go on.” It also took time to find distance, reflect and classify his emotions.

“There have been some offers in the past two years, but I didn’t feel like burning it,” he continued. “But I will deal with exciting options. I have the experience with national teams and in preparing a team with a vision for a tournament for two years.”

Löw: Withdrawal would have been correct

According to “Bild” information, Löw can imagine taking over a national team at the coming World Cup in almost one and a half years in Canada, the USA and Mexico.

With a view to his time as a national coach at the German Football Association, the ex-national coach in the “Kicker” also admitted that after the 2018 World Cup in Russia, in which defending champion Germany had not got beyond the preliminary round, a resignation would have been the right step .

“I should have cleared the way for someone who comes with new ideas and does a clear cut with the golden generation,” said Löw.
