Uli Hoeneß defended the Müller-Aus at “Blickpunkt Sport” and sees parallels with other legends that “did not want to see that they are no longer so good”.

When FC Bayern is fighting for his survival in the Champions League on Wednesday, a man will be part of the hopes: Thomas Müller, 35 years old, FC Bavaria legend, sorted out because it is no longer perceived as good enough. After the muscle bundle of Jamal Musiala, Müller is again extremely important for FC Bayern.

Hoeneß about Müller-Aus: “Didn’t want to see that they are no longer so good”

In the eyes of Uli Hoeneß, it was still the right decision not to offer Müller a new working paper. He sees the mistake of the 35-year-old’s self-awareness: “It would have been better if he had made the decision and not FC Bayern,” so Hoeneß at “Blickpunkt Sport”. He sees the urbayers in a long tradition of aging agents: “I have experienced many big players who have stopped: Günter Netzer, Wolfgang Overath, Franz Beckenbauer, Gerd Müller. In the end, it crashed because they did not want to see that they are no longer as good as they would like it to be.”

Hoeneß wanted this assessment with his public council at the premiere of the Müller documentary Bringing close, the honorary president now said: “I am incredibly annoyed that I said that because I actually wanted to build a bridge to Thomas because I already knew at the time that his contract would not be extended.” At that time, Hoeneß Müller suggested a career end.

Difference player Müller? “Not enough for four, five games a year”

In the past few days, he has shown that Müller can still make the difference. In the quarter-final first leg against Inter Milan Came Müller from the bank in the 75th minute and managed what his teammates had not achieved the whole game about: he brought the ball over the line. Also in the Bundesliga duel against Borussia Dortmund played Müller – this time right from the start – and was jointly responsible for the can opener: the 35 -year -old switched quickly in the 65th minute, served straightforward and directly Guerreiro, who scored the 1-1.

Hoeneß does not see his thesis that Müller can no longer keep up with the record champions. “It is not enough for four or five games a year for 15 minutes. A contract at FC Bayern lasts 365 days. The decision was made together. There was no single in the committees, also on the supervisory board, which disagreed.”

More than just Goal participation: FC Bayern colleagues praise Müller

Müller collected twelve goal participations this season. In the 116 minutes he was on the field, he was directly involved in a goal of FC Bayern. Significantly less than what Müller had delivered in the high phase of his career year after year. But even today, his hits are often the one that the club needs. In the Champions League, Müller brought his team in front against Bratislava and Donetsk.

If you ask your teammates, it is not just these moments that currently make him valuable. “We are all happy that Thomas is still there this season because of course he can give a team, regardless of whether he is on the pitch or not,” said Joshua Kimmich and was part of a number of colleagues who had recently praised Müller’s influence on team and mentality.

Hoeneß wants Müller “Binden to the Association”

Hoeneß also comes to a similar conclusion: “A person like Thomas Müller, a great athlete and – as I also believe – a great manager who would also see FC Bayern well for the next many years. (…) I have never made a secret of the fact that Thomas Müller is one of those who we absolutely have to bind to the club,” said Hoeneß.
