FC Bayern is once again the outstanding team in the current Bundesliga season, leading the table by eleven points after winning the classic against Borussia Dortmund last Saturday. For the German record national player and long-time Bayern star Lothar Matthäus, it is clear that FC Bayern should therefore be the biggest block in the upcoming World Cup.
In his “Sky” column, the 64-year-old, who himself took part in five World Cup finals, called for no fewer than six Bayern stars for the German World Cup squad in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
“For me, FC Bayern have selected (Joshua, editor’s note) Kimmich, (Jonathan) Tah, (Jamal) Musiala, (Serge) Gnabry, (Leon) Goretzka and (Lennart) Karl for the World Cup,” wrote the 1990 world champion captain, who himself played 150 times for Germany.
A nomination for Lennart Karl would be particularly surprising, as the 18-year-old has not yet made any senior international appearances.
“Karl brings that certain extra, similar to Odonkor at the 2006 World Cup. Odonkor was more about his speed, Karl has different, versatile skills. Karl has already shown his level at the highest international level,” said Matthäus about the Bayern youngster, who has already scored seven competitive goals for Munich this season.
“Wirtz and Musiala can be the difference players”
For a successful World Cup in June and July, Matthäus believes it is also essential that alongside Jamal Musiala from FC Bayern, Florian Wirtz from Liverpool FC also reaches his peak performance.
“Wirtz and Musiala can be our difference players at the World Cup. Wirtz showed it a few times in Liverpool, Musiala still lacks the rhythm of the game. He needs longer spells at the club, that’s extremely important,” said the TV expert.
