FC Bayern starts 2022 with a defeat. Against Borussia Mönchengladbach, the Munich decimated by Corona lost at home in front of a ghost backdrop with 1: 2. Robert Lewandowski had put the record champions in the lead (18th), but Florian Neuhaus (27th) and Stefan Lainer (31st) turned the game in favor of the guests before the break.

The foals, who in turn had to replace four players infected with corona, achieved an important victory in the fight against relegation after just one point from the previous five games. This was also guaranteed by goalkeeper Yann Sommer, who prevented the undaunted running Munich from equalizing in the second half through Thomas Müller, among others.

That’s how the game went

With heavy snow drifts at times, the world footballer had put Munich in the lead early on (18th). The previously weak Gladbachers then got stronger and stronger and took advantage of the big coordination problems in the defense of the record champions through Florian Neuhaus (27th) and Stefan Lainer (31st).

“I’m optimistic, we already have a good team on the field,” said sports director Hasan Salihamidzic before the game on Sat.1. In fact, the Munich Notelf initially determined the game, clearly eager to take revenge for the 0: 5 debacle in the DFB Cup with the foals.

“We have the task,” said coach Julian Nagelsmann, “to push the game in the right direction with the first team.” Nevertheless, he fell back on his youngsters. In the second half came Paul Wanner, who was only 16 years old, and Salihamidzic’s nephew Luca Copado, who was 17 years old. “If they go into the Buxe, it’s not so good, they should risk something.”

At first, the experienced had worked hard. The eager Serge Gnabry fired a first warning shot (8th), Lewandowski a second (14th), shortly afterwards the Pole hit with a violent shot from about 13 meters. Bayern with Joshua Kimmich in the back on the right and Marcel Sabitzer in the back on the left seemed to be in control at this point.

For Gladbach, the goal was of course a wake-up call. Borussia now dared more, they got better – and benefited from an unsuccessful attempt at clarification by Kimmich when equalizing. Shortly afterwards, Lainer headed a corner from Luca Netz. The Munich defense was not only badly coordinated in these situations.

Shortly before the break, things got turbulent. Goalkeeper Sven Ulreich prevented a third goal by Breel Embolo in his first Bundesliga game since June 2020 – Lewandowski only hit the post on the other side, Matthias Ginter cleared Thomas Müller’s margin just before the line.

Offensive, Bayern knew how to please despite their voting problems. They regularly created good chances, but lacked penetration – or failed, like Jamal Musiala (56th) or Müller (58th), because of the good summer.
