FC Bayern faces serious competition in the race for Newcastle professional Anthony Gordon. According to English and Spanish media reports, FC Barcelona has started talks with the 25-year-old offensive player and, like the German record champions, is now one of the most concrete options for a move in the summer.
Update 8:18 p.m: In the afternoon, Fabrizio Romano reported that Barcelona and Gordon had come to a personal agreement. In the evening, the transfer reporter added that both the club management in Newcastle and the club owners there had agreed to the offer from Barcelona. Gordon will travel to Spain for a medical check this week. The transfer fee of 70 million euros mentioned in several reports can be increased to up to 80 million euros with the help of bonuses. In England, “The Athletic” even assumes a basic transfer fee of 80 million euros, which could include further bonuses and a possible share in the sale. FC Bayern was not prepared to pay such a price.

It is unlikely that Gordon, who still has a contract until 2030, will wear the Newcastle jersey next season. He had sat on the bench for 90 minutes in each of the last four games of the season, whereupon coach Eddie Howe meaningfully explained: “When you reach this stage of the season, it is of course part of the process that we start to look ahead to next year.”
Until now it was assumed that the move to Munich was already so far behind the scenes that Gordon was left out of Howe. Everything is said to have already been clarified between the player and FC Bayern, but there are still major discrepancies in the transfer fee expectations. According to reports, Newcastle are demanding around 86 million euros for Gordon, significantly more than his market value of 60 million euros.

The high price tag had previously deterred FC Barcelona, but now there seems to be a prospect of a lower transfer fee. According to reporter Ben Jacobs, the Catalans have hopes of a deal in the region of €70 million. Barça last spent so much money on Antoine Griezmann (€120 million from Atlético) and Frenkie de Jong (€86 million from Ajax) in the summer of 2019.
The 17-time national player Gordon, who is going to the World Cup with the Three Lions, is available because Newcastle relies on income to avoid problems with Financial Fair Play. After 17 goals and five assists – twelve of them scorers in the Champions League – Gordon came into focus for Munich as a flexible offensive option behind Luis Díaz (29) and Michael Olise (24).
