Thomas Müller visited you and the other Bayern bosses in the stands in December. Can you give us an update on his possible return to FC Bayern?
At the moment there isn’t that much contact between him and us because he started the season in the MLS with Vancouver. Whenever he is in Germany, we are always happy when he visits us. As for his future, he needs to be clear about what he wants. It’s no use trying to tempt him with the carrot now. It just has to mature for him. This job is incredibly demanding. And one thing you shouldn’t forget.
Thomas Müller has now been a professional footballer for 18 years. I assume that he is a very rich man who doesn’t necessarily need this job so that he can prosper economically in the future. Only those who are willing to work 24/7 can do this job. Anyone who thinks that you can do this on the side, give a few interviews every now and then and practically get things done through communication alone is completely wrong. And that is what we need for the future. We have to find people who are prepared to do everything for the good of FC Bayern – and not for themselves.
Finally: FC Bayern’s women’s team has already been confirmed as champions, in the cup final and in the semi-finals of the Champions League. Are you hoping for a men’s and women’s double treble?
That would of course be the ultimate. But now we wait and see, there are still important games to play. Just like the men, the women have to play the cup final against Stuttgart against an opponent from Wolfsburg who should not be underestimated. And FC Barcelona as a semi-final opponent in the Champions League is also a real house number. But of course it would be a wonderful thing if there were six trophies on the parapet at the end.
