FC Bayern has reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League. In the game against Lazio Rome, Munich were ultimately able to rely on their top scorer.
Thanks to Harry Kane, FC Bayern reached the next round of the Champions League. The Englishman scored twice in the second leg of the round of 16 on Tuesday evening (39th/66th minute) and thus played a decisive role in his team’s ultimately deserved 3-0 win (2-0) against Lazio Rome. DFB star Thomas Müller contributed the third goal (45th + 2).
The Munich team lost the first leg three weeks ago 0-1. The end of the premier class and with it probably the last chance for a title this season was looming. But against Lazio, outgoing coach Thomas Tuchel’s team appeared wide awake from the start and seemed willing to turn around the result from the first game – which they ultimately succeeded in doing.
That’s how the game went
Thomas Tuchel surprised in his lineup. Summer newcomer Min-jae Kim only stayed on the bench. In central defense, the coach relied on Eric Dier and Matthijs de Ligt. Thomas Müller was also in the starting line-up on offense behind top scorer Harry Kane.
At the start of the game, the Munich team took control of the game. But the Italians’ defense was solid. After just under a quarter of an hour, Musiala was denied by Lazio keeper Provedel from the edge of the penalty area (14th). Kane, Musiala and Guerreiro had a double chance and Kane again missed further opportunities to take the lead (17th/24th/35th).
Lazio lacked a lot on the offensive for a long time. But suddenly the Romans had a huge opportunity. The ex-Dortmunder Immobile headed narrowly past the goal (37th). On the other side, Kane did better. Guerreiro’s final attempt failed, but the star striker headed the ball into the box. Müller increased before the break. De Ligt had fired a volley towards the box and the DFB star hit it into the net with his forehead.
In the second half, Bayern continued to be in control of the action. Guerreiro could have made it 3-0 after just under an hour, but narrowly missed the mark (59′). Kane then put the lid on with his second goal. Provedel could only fend off a Sané shot forward. Kane didn’t miss the opportunity and pushed the rebound into the net – the decision and the quarter-final ticket for Munich.
