6 professionals around Werner were close
So far, only two goalscorers in the history of the Bundesliga have managed to score 20 goals in the first half of a season alone. On Sunday the duo became a trio. Harry Kane became the third (Bayern) player to join the well-known club – and still has three games left to displace two of his club’s former icons.
Kane beckons record: most goals in a Bundesliga first half of the season
Against Stuttgart (3-0), Kane scored his 19th and 20th goals this season. Only Gerd Müller (1968/69) and Robert Lewandowski (2020/21) had previously reached the mark – Müller even after the 14th matchday. However, the “bomber of the nation” remained at 20 goals for the rest of the first half of the season, while Lewandowski was able to add two goals. 22 hits are still a record to this day. Kane could initially leave Müller behind with one more goal, catch up with record holder Lewandowski with two more goals and even overtake him with three goals. A first half result of 23 goals after Bayern’s remaining three games in Wolfsburg (December 20th), against Hoffenheim (January 12th) and in the catch-up game against Union Berlin (January 24th) does not seem unrealistic.
TM statistics: Top scorers by matchday in the Bundesliga
Gladbach’s Peter Meyer (1967/68) narrowly missed the 20-goal mark in Bundesliga history, although he already had 19 after 15 match days. While Müller and Lewandowski also scored 19 goals in the first half of the season in two other seasons, no other player achieved this figure. Several had 18 goals after the first 17 games: Timo Werner (RB Leipzig, 2019/20), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (BVB, 2015/16), Vedad Ibisevic (Hoffenheim, 2008/09), Dieter Müller ( 1. FC Köln, 1977/78), Franz Brungs (Nuremberg, 1967/68), Uwe Seeler (HSV, 1963/64) and Gerd Müller twice more at FC Bayern (1966/67 and 1969/70). For the complete statistics: Top scorers by match days.
