Former Bayern boss Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is convinced that the Club World Cup, reformed by the world football association FIFA, will prevail in the long term.
“I would say it is a different level of quality and I am convinced that little by little it will be accepted by the public and the general audience,” the 70-year-old said in a FIFA interview.
Last year, the first edition of the new Club World Cup took place in the USA with 32 teams, and Chelsea FC ultimately won the cup.
“Now it’s really a Club World Cup. Whoever wins it is the best team in the world,” said Rummenigge. For the ex-world-class striker, once CEO and currently a member of the supervisory board at Bayern Munich, the reform is “almost a global sensation”. The next edition is planned for 2029.
Before the format change, each continental association had sent a representative to a short tournament. The new Club World Cup, now with many more teams, has replaced the Confederations Cup, which was previously always held a year before the regular World Cup.
