The list of interested parties associated with Paul Wanner is getting longer and longer and so it was only a matter of time before Borussia Dortmund’s name was mentioned at some point. It has been loosely mentioned in the rumor mill for a few days now “Bild” newspaper now more concrete. The offensive talent awarded to Heidenheim by FC Bayern has recently been an increasingly frequent topic in important meetings of the BVB management.

The group around sports director Lars Ricken and sports director Sebastian Kehl are convinced that Wanner could immediately deliver at Champions League level. The Dortmund team would like to sign the 18-year-old permanently and keep him long-term, but FC Bayern are not currently thinking about selling him. That’s why BVB is now only considering a loan deal. Wanner is tied to Munich until 2027.

To date, there has only been one loan from FC Bayern to the Black and Yellows. In January 2008, at the age of 19, Mats Hummels moved to Dortmund for more match practice – without the option to buy. A year later, both clubs agreed on a permanent transfer at the player’s express request. Borussia could also speculate on this with Wanner. While he could take the next career step at BVB and mature into a top performer, he would have to line up behind Jamal Musiala (21) in Munich – and in the future possibly also behind transfer target Florian Wirtz (21).

Wanner to BVB? TM community divided

“Wanner would only be realistic if Bayern got Wirtz in the summer. But that can almost be ruled out,” says BVB fan “Hanzinho” in the TM community. “A loan makes no sense for us at all and a sale will only be an issue for Bayern in the above-mentioned case.” Some users also emphasize that BVB have two very similar types of players in Giovanni Reyna (22) and Kjell Wätjen (18). already in our own ranks.

“Hanzinho” doesn’t see “an upgrade in Wanner yet, for which you would have to pay massively more, and on the other hand, there is a much greater need for action in other positions.” BVB fan “Finn84” also says: “I don’t see where Wanner should – currently – help us much more than Reyna can or does. That may be different in a year, but for this ‘opportunity’ in a year where we really get something out of it, enter into a deal like this? I’m not in favor of it.”

It seems only logical to me that people are dealing with Wanner. On the one hand, Bayern are always closely linked to Wirtz, despite his alleged extension, and Musiala is an absolute top performer, which means that there will probably be little room for Wanner to assert himself in Munich. It is therefore not unlikely that Bayern will make money from him after this season, regardless of what reports to the contrary are currently being pushed through…

“TheClown,” among others, takes a more nuanced view: “I don’t think it makes any sense. Of course it’s not sexy to train for direct competition. But we lack quality in this position. You can see when Brandt is missing. We also lack money to improve the squad. A two-year loan similar to Hakimi can make sense for all parties. Even if it doesn’t feel that exciting at first glance. If we play better football for little money for two years …” For this scenario, Wanner would have to extend his contract with FC Bayern in advance.

User “BVB 09” would also like a Wanner transfer, but also knows: “A loan to BVB would of course be brilliant for Bayern. However, I can’t imagine us bringing in a talent without any prospect of a commitment. And especially not when it’s an FCB player. I consider this personality to be very unrealistic. Bayern will not give him away completely and if they do, then only with a buyback option. I would like it, but I don’t believe in it.” However, that also applies to the short to medium-term opportunity for Wanner in Munich. With a view to Julian Brandt (28), who is bound until 2026, the BVB supporter adds: “Brandt’s personality will soon be on the table here. (…) At the end of the contract he will be 30. So we have to sit down together soon and see what both sides actually want. If he doesn’t extend it until the summer, Wanner would actually be a logical alternative.”

People in Munich also remain skeptical. Bayern fan “Triplefeld” cannot imagine Wanner moving to BVB. “Even if he has a clear hang-up, the club thinks highly of him. Especially if you don’t get Wirtz, you won’t give up Wanner. He also has two years left on his contract. For me there are more indications that he will be extended and loaned out again. Even if you give him away, you would only do so with a buyback option and (BVB) wouldn’t do that.” But he doesn’t see a guaranteed regular place in either Munich or Dortmund anyway. User “MrCoffee” puts it more exaggeratedly: “Dortmund instead of Bavaria is like Austria instead of Germany. Let’s see what Wanner decides.”

Wanner decision only in the second half of the season

The offensive talent has been courted by both associations for a long time and is deliberately leaving his options open. Wanner has six goals and two assists in 21 appearances in Heidenheim. A strong start to the season was often followed by mixed performances; last weekend he ended the series of twelve games without a goal for FCH with his goal in the 1:3 win against VfB Stuttgart. Nevertheless, nothing stands in the way of a further appreciation in the Bundesliga’s market value update next Friday.

There are still no concrete negotiations between BVB and the players, even if Wanner knows about the interest, the “Bild” continues. The player’s wish is to continue to be a regular next season and to play in the Champions League. In addition to Dortmund, the premier class contenders Leverkusen, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Leipzig are also among those interested. However, BVB has been pursuing Wanner for years and, alongside Wolfsburg, was already very far into the discussions in 2021. Borussia scouts will continue to watch his games regularly, but a future decision will probably only be made in the second half of the season.
