Return to the youth club
As expected, FC Bayern has signed Max Eberl for the position of sports director, which has been vacant for months. After a vote was taken at a supervisory board meeting on Monday, the Munich-based company now officially presented the 50-year-old. He signed a contract at Säbener Straße until 2027 and officially begins his duties on March 1st.
In September 2023, Eberl agreed to part ways with his then club RB Leipzig, but was still under contract until the end. Therefore a transfer fee is due. According to the German Press Agency, this amounts to 4.5 million euros, while “Bild” had previously reported 3.5 million euros.
Eberl said: “I spent my entire childhood and youth at FC Bayern and in Munich, so it is special for me to now return to the club where it all began in a new role. The job as sports director is a big challenge that I will tackle with a lot of respect and humility, but with even more anticipation. Together with everyone here, I would like to do everything I can to ensure that FC Bayern continues to be successful in the future and bring joy to its fans.”
FC Bayern signs Max Eberl: coach as the first challenge
With the signing of Eberl, who became a professional for the record champions in the early 1990s and wore the Bayern jersey for a total of 15 years, the Munich team has clarified an important personnel detail during the restructuring of the management team. This became necessary after the club separated from CEO Oliver Kahn and sports director Hasan Salihamidzic at the end of May 2023. Kahn’s position was taken over by long-time finance chief Jan-Christian Dreesen, while Salihamidzic’s position initially remained vacant. Most of the tasks were recently taken over by Christoph Freund, who was hired in July, but he was officially brought in as sports director.
“With the new organizational structure that we have decided on for our Executive Board in the Supervisory Board, we will create lean and efficient structures that enable quick coordination and dynamic decisions. It is important to us at FC Bayern to always be able to act quickly,” explained President Herbert Hainer. From July 1st, the board will consist of three people: Dreesen, Eberl and Michael Diederich. Andreas Jung announced in November that he would no longer be extending his contract, which was expiring in the summer.
Eberl, who has long been in the favor of honorary president Uli Hoeneß, will be busy from March onwards, in addition to squad planning for the 2024/25 season, primarily with the search for a new coach. Thomas Tuchel will leave the club after just over a year and the successor is still open.

As Kovac’s successor, Flick will initially be interim coach, and later he will be given responsibility for the star ensemble for a longer period of time. He records victory after victory. Flick also celebrates the triple and a historic six titles in one year. This gives him a contract extension until June 30, 2023, but the collaboration will be ended early. There are repeated differences of opinion with the then sports director Hasan Salihamidzic. Flick also really wants to succeed Joachim Löw as national coach. After a 1-2 defeat at Bayer Leverkusen after four competitive wins, FC Bayern slipped to second place in the Bundesliga. The then bosses Oliver Kahn and Salihamidzic see the season’s goals at risk and parted ways with Nagelsmann, who had signed a contract until 2026. The team is still involved in the cup and Champions League at this point. “Julian Nagelsmann shouldn’t have gone on a skiing holiday after the defeat in Leverkusen. If he had stayed in Munich, we would have sat down and talked on Monday or Tuesday.
