FC Barcelona wins thanks to Lewandowski: final spurt against Celta Vigo

Lewandowski with a brace

Former Bayern professionals Robert Lewandowski and João Cancelo turned FC Barcelona’s almost lost game against Celta Vigo with their late goals. Thanks to goals from Lewandowski (81st/85th minute) and Cancelo (89th), the Catalans won the game against the outsiders on Saturday 3-2 (0-1) after being 2-0 down.

Barcelona took over the top of the table in LaLiga for the time being. The team led by national team captain Ilkay Gündogan is one point ahead of Real Madrid and is level on points with FC Girona. However, Spain’s record champions can take back the lead on Sunday with a win in the Madrid duel against Atlético.

The Norwegian Jørgen Strand Larsen (19th) gave the guests an early lead, national goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen had no chance. The Greek Anastasios Douvikas (76th) then provided the actually reassuring lead. Then came Lewandowski: The former Bayern striker equalized with his brace before Cancelo scored the winning goal.

Barça, however, lost midfielder Frenkie de Jong for the time being, who had to leave the field in the 36th minute. The Catalans said the 26-year-old suffered an injury to his syndesmotic ligament. “You have to do tests. He is a very strong player and rarely asks for a substitution. If he asked for it, it means there is something there, but we hope it will be as little as possible,” coach Xavi said after the game. Spanish media put the expected downtime at one month.

Gündogan raves about FC Barcelona’s “incredible” comeback

After the crazy comeback, Gündogan raved about his team’s “incredible comeback”. “But there are still many things that we have to improve,” warned the 32-year-old. “It wasn’t a good game,” coach Xavi admitted. “It was a brutal comeback. We played with confidence and courage, even if we were a bit sloppy at times.”
