FC Barcelona has temporarily taken over the top of the table in Spain with a last-minute winning goal against neighbors FC Girona. In the end it was 2:1 (1:1). Coach Flick saw yellow-red and missed the “Clásico”.
Pedri gave coach Hans-Dieter Flick’s team the lead in the 13th minute. But Girona – only around 100 kilometers from Barcelona – was almost an equal opponent for long stretches. Veteran Axel Witsel made it 1-1 in the 20th minute.
Flick to the stands
After the change, Barcelona increasingly pressed for the winning goal, but it didn’t seem to want to come. It wasn’t until the third minute of added time that Ronald Araujo redeemed the fans and scored the 2-1, which put Barcelona back on top of the table, at least for the time being.
Immediately before Araujo’s redeeming goal, Flick was shown yellow-red by the referee for complaining. He is therefore not allowed to be on the sidelines at Real Madrid in the Clásico on Sunday next week.
Protests against the game in the USA
Worth noting: Barcelona and Girona players stood motionless for 15 seconds after kick-off at Montjuïc Stadium. They were protesting against La Liga’s plan to play Barcelona’s December game against Villarreal in Miami.
The protest was organized by the Spanish footballers’ union, which called on top division clubs to draw attention to the league’s “lack of transparency, dialogue and consistency”.
