FC Barcelona’s fifth signing this summer is complete: the Catalans announced the signing of Jules Koundé from league rivals FC Sevilla on Friday evening. The day before, both sides agreed on a transfer, but the medical check and the signing of the contract were still missing for the finalization of the deal. As announced by Barça, the Frenchman has signed a contract until 2027. The usual release clause in Spain is now one billion euros.

The 23-year-old, whose contract with the Andalusians originally ran until 2024, is said to be coming for a transfer fee of 50 million euros, to which a further 10 million euros in bonuses can be added. With fixed investments of 153 million euros in this transfer period, Barça is at the top of the ranking of the clubs with the highest spending – ahead of FC Bayern.

With five new ones, three replacements have been made so far. After initially signing Andreas Christensen and Franck Kessié for free, Leeds United’s Raphinha and Bayern Munich’s top scorer are due €58m and €45m respectively.

Koundé really wanted to go to FC Barcelona – is considered Xavi’s preferred candidate

The decisive factor in Koundé’s transfer to Barcelona was the defensive player’s refusal to join competitor Chelsea. Koundé’s defensiveness has forced Sevilla FC to enter into negotiations with Spanish league rivals, although an agreement is said to have already been reached with the Blues.

Koundé, who is considered coach Xavi’s preferred candidate, switched from his training club Girondins Bordeaux to the Blanquirrojos for €25m in 2019 and has since made 133 competitive appearances, nine goals and three assists. During this time, the Parisian increased his market value from 15 to 60 million euros. The transfer fee for Sevilla can reach a corresponding amount.
