FC Barcelona have announced the transfer of Iñigo Martínez, which has been expected for months. The 32-year-old central defender joins the Catalans on a free transfer following the end of his contract with Athletic Bilbao. He signed a working paper until 2025, which officials say includes a €400m release clause.
The change has been considered perfect since March, but the official announcement was delayed because the central defender initially wanted to keep an eye on the unclear situation surrounding the financial problems and registration of newcomers to the Spanish champions. With those stones cleared, Barça could now unveil their second free transfer to Ilkay Gündogan (32; Manchester City).

Martínez arrives at Barcelona with the experience of 357 La Liga appearances for Real Sociedad and Bilbao. At the Blaugrana, the left-footed player, who is one of five central defenders in the current squad, has his first opportunity in his career to play in international competition. Financially, the change is not a step forward, the gross salary is said to be around nine million euros, and he received a similar amount in Bilbao.
