FC Barcelona: Robert Lewandowski receives an additional suspension after yellow-red

Barca appeal

After just 31 minutes, Robert Lewandowski’s day at FC Barcelona was over after a yellow-red card in a game at CA Osasuna last week. However, the Pole, who is currently preparing for the 2022 World Cup with the national team, has to wait longer than expected for his next assignment for the Catalans after the break: the Spanish federation RFEF banned the attacker in addition to the usual ban the next game with a penalty for two more games. FC Barcelona announced on Wednesday afternoon that they wanted to appeal.

Lewandowski committed a tactical foul in the 11th minute and was sent off just 20 minutes later for an illegal use of his elbow in a tackle with Osasuna captain David Garcia. In the subsequent discussion with the referee, the 34-year-old is said to have made a derogatory gesture, which the association retrospectively interpreted as an expression of “a disrespectful attitude towards the referees”.

With the suspension raised to three games, the striker could miss FC Barcelona in the games against city rivals Espanyol (December 31) and Atlético Madrid (January 8), as well as in the second round of the Copa del Rey at the beginning of next year. For Lewandowski it was the first dismissal after more than nine and a half years. He last saw the red card in a Borussia Dortmund jersey on February 9, 2013 in the Bundesliga game against Hamburger SV.
