Marc-André ter Stegen’s professional future continues to be a headache for FC Barcelona. There are currently signs that things are going in a way that the Catalans don’t like at all.
What’s next for Marc-André ter Stegen at FC Barcelona? After his unpleasant end to the loan at FC Girona, including a serious injury and relegation, the German goalkeeper is officially part of the Catalans’ squad again. But he doesn’t play a role in the plans of Hansi Flick and Co.
This inevitably raises the question about the sporting future of the former Gladbach player. As of today, the sports newspaper “AS” reports, the 34-year-old does not want to leave Barca. The reason is obvious: he wouldn’t earn anywhere near as well at any other club. What will happen next for him and his contract, which runs until 2028, is unclear.
Will Barca terminate Ter Stegen’s contract?
According to “AS” information, Barca is in the Ter Stegen trap mainly because the keeper was unable to recommend himself to any other club due to his injury and long absence. A firm transfer is therefore not foreseeable at the moment, it is said.
The alternative would be another loan, which according to “AS” assessment is currently the most likely scenario. The Barca bosses don’t like that at all. In the event of a loan, the Catalans would still have to pay at least part of Ter Stegen’s salary themselves. This is not part of the plan and would be a setback in the transfer plans for the coming season.
Another possible alternative would be to terminate the contract early. But Ter Stegen would have to agree to this first. At the same time, it is clear that this would not be cheap for FC Barcelona either. With an estimated annual salary of well over ten million euros, he is one of the top earners in the squad. This puts the veteran in an extremely good position in possible dissolution negotiations – and, above all, is a major headache for the Barca bosses.
