FC Barcelona: Balance sheets are not clean – Champions League ban is imminent

Big loss, big penalty

According to a media report, FC Barcelona is threatened with a ban from the Champions League. As “Welt am Sonntag” reports, citing unnamed sources, the top Spanish club is said to have violated the financial rules of the European Football Union. Barça only reported record figures for the 2022/23 financial year at the end of September.

According to the report, Barcelona is said to have included illegal funds in its most recent three-year balance sheet. UEFA did not want to comment on this, and the Catalans initially did not comment either. According to the newspaper, expenses must be offset by “sales directly attributable to the football business”.

The net profit of 304 million euros presented in September also included proceeds from the sale of marketing and TV rights as well as other sports, which, however, is not permitted for the assessment of the three-year balance sheet according to UEFA regulations. As the newspaper further writes, citing UEFA circles, the consequence and sanction could be a Champions League ban for two to three years from the 2024/2025 season. “The higher the loss, the higher the punishment,” an anonymous informant is quoted as saying. Last season, Barça reported operating income of 1.26 billion euros. The reigning Spanish champions were also able to reduce net debt for the second time in a row: from 680 million euros as of June 30, 2021 to 552 million euros as of June 30, 2023.
