FC Augsburg has hired its dream coach, he has come to an agreement with BVB: Enrico Maaßen will coach the Swabian Bundesliga team in the future. With the 38-year-old, FCA is primarily focusing on developing his talents.

Now the last coaching chair in the 1st Bundesliga has also been filled: FC Augsburg have signed Enrico Maaßen from Borussia Dortmund’s third division team: The contract has not yet been signed, but the verbal agreement is in place. “The final contract details will be fixed in writing in the next few days,” said the Swabians.

The 38-year-old was the first candidate for the Fuggerstadt after Markus Weinzierl angrily threw down after the last game of the season against Fürth.

Talent promotion and development

“We have followed Enrico Maaßen’s development with great interest over the past few years because he is a young coach who is hungry for success and wants to develop himself and those around him. He works very intensively with young players and has proven that he can successfully promote them “, FCA Managing Director Stefan Reuter justified the decision.

According to BR reporter René Kirsch, Maaßen is also bringing his previous assistant coach Sebastian Block to Augsburg.

Third division promoted with Borussia Dortmund II

Even if Maaßen himself has only played in the amateur field and has worked as a third division coach so far, great hopes rest on him. After all, the people of Augsburg have had good experiences with trainers from the amateur sector on several occasions – including with the two Lower Bavarians Markus Weinzierl and Manuel Baum.

Maassen could now make a similar career leap. The Swabians have numerous young players like the 17-year-old defender Aaron Zehnter in their ranks, who should mature under the 38-year-old. The fuss about record transfer Ricardo Pepi was great at first. So far, however, he has not been able to assert himself accordingly. The new coach should also take him forward and make him a regular player.

hope for calmer times

With the commitment of the new coaching team, calm should return to FCA. That could be difficult if the club has a bumpy start to the new season, says BR reporter René Kirsch. But maybe Augsburg will make it if they sign another player or two in the next few weeks.

Portrait of Maassen

Maassen, who was born in Wismar in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, has been in charge of BVB’s U23s since the summer of 2020 and managed to get promoted from the regional league to the 3rd division with the talented players. This season, the team ended up there in ninth place. Maassen previously worked as a coach at SV Drochtersen/Assel and SV Rödinghausen. During his active career as a player, Maassen was active in the regional league, among other things.
