Favorites fly out at World Handball World Cup
01/25/2025 – 9:58 a.m.Reading time: 1 min.

Portugal and Brazil made it to the quarter-finals of the Handball World Cup. Quite different from two great nations of sport.
The Handball World Cup has its first fist-thick surprise: With Norway (Vice World Champion 2017 and 2019) and Sweden (Vice World Champion of 2021, EM Dritter from 2024 and European champion from 2022), two favorites left the tournament prematurely.
The main round results of Friday evening no longer allow the two handball nations to come. Surprisingly, Portugal and Brazil, who secured first and two place in a group with Sweden and Norway and are now in the quarter -finals.
Brazil prevailed somewhat surprisingly in the Norwegian capital Oslo with 27:24 (14: 9) against the four -time Champion of Sweden, but also qualified for the first time for the round of the last eight at a World Cup like Portugal.
In the sixth duel with the Scandinavians, it was also the first victory for the Brazilians who had surprised Norway at the start with a success over co-hosts. The Norwegians, who won 39:22 against Chile on Friday evening, can no longer qualify for quarter -finals due to the lost direct comparison with Brazil regardless of their last game in the direct duel with Sweden.
Portugal prevailed in the second main round game with 35:29 (15:16) against the two -time world champion from Spain, taking a big step towards group victory and is expected to meet the German national team in the quarter -finals.
