Yanqing (AP) – Ski racer Mikaela Shiffrin messed up her start at the Winter Olympics in China. The top favorite for the gold medal slipped away after only a few goals in the giant slalom on Monday and was eliminated in the first round.
At the Games four years ago in Pyeongchang, the 73-time World Cup winner in this discipline was still on top of the podium.
The 26-year-old American has her next chance at gold on Wednesday. Then there is the slalom for the women, in which Shiffrin is also one of the hunted. The longtime ski dominator had planned to compete in all alpine disciplines at the Olympics.
