Between past and present, feelings are the real protagonists of Fathers and daughtersfilm directed in 2015 by the Italian director Gabriel Muccino and with a stellar cast. Among the main performers there are in fact Russell Crowe, Amanda Seyfried, Diane Kruger and Jane Fonda.

Fathers and daughtersthe plot

In 1989 the successful writer Jake Davis (Crowe), winner of a Pulitzer Prize, lives his quiet life in New York with his beloved wife and a little girl, named Katie. One evening, after a party in honor of his latest book, the couple is the victim of a terrible car accident. Driving is Jake who, during an argument with his wife, does not notice the turn of a lorry. The impact is dramatic: the woman dies instantly, while her husband survives but remains the victim of serious health problems, with frequent tremors and epileptic attacks.

Despite its precarious condition, Jake alone raises little Kate, nicknamed ‘Chip’. A few years later, on the advice of his doctor, Jake tries to cure his ailments by being hospitalized for seven months in a psychiatric hospital. Little Katie then goes to her uncles, William and Elizabeth, members of the New York upper class. Elizabeth, in her heart, never forgave Jake for her sister’s death. Upon discharge from the hospital, Jake returns to pick up his daughter. However, the brothers-in-law do not consider him capable of looking after the child and so they propose to Jake – meanwhile in dire economic straits – to consent to the adoption.

The man refuses the proposal but, after an attack on his brother-in-law William, her brothers-in-law sue to get the baby adopted. Jake desperately tries to write a novel as quickly as possible, working day and night, to earn and prove that he is an adequate fatherbut everything seems insufficient to counter the brothers-in-law.

Until a love affair emerges between William and his pregnant secretary, who triggers a divorce between Jake’s brothers-in-law. At that point Katie can return to the arms of her father who in the meantime publishes Fathers and daughterswhat will be his most famous novel.

However, the return of an epileptic seizure suddenly seizes the writer and throws him off balance. Jake falls and hits his head violently on a radiator, dying instantly. Days after the funeral, it is learned that his latest novel has won the Pulitzer Prizethe second of his career, and has been topping the sales charts for several weeks.

Fathers and daughters25 years later

We are in 2014 and Katie (Seyfried), now an adult, works as a trainee social worker. The girl leads a wild life made up of wild nights out and superficial love affairs, with many different partners. Her employer gives her the case of a little girl named Lucy who she has never spoken to since her mother passed away. Katie identifies with the little one and after many efforts manages to create a relationship of trust with her. To the point of being able to get her to speak before the case is taken off her.

Meanwhile Katie meets a boy who is a big fan of her father Jakie. His favorite novel is his own Fathers and daughters. This literary passion brings the two closer together and they end up falling in love. Things get complicated when Katie refuses to really bond with the boy, cheating on him. Finally, after working through her fear of love, the girl manages to really open up to him.
