Torben Ulrich, Lars Ulrich’s father, died at the age of 95. The Metallica drummer paid tribute to him via Instagram by sharing several photos of his father. In the accompanying caption, the 59-year-old explained Torben Ulrich’s diverse interests and character traits. The two were considered close; his father supported the music career of Filius, who himself could have become a decent tennis player, from an early age.

About Torben Ulrich
Torben Ulrich, born in Copenhagen in 1928, was a professional tennis player and a member of the Danish Davis Cup team for several years. He won the Antwerp international singles title twice. He also worked as a music journalist and wrote for various Danish newspapers and magazines.
As he grew older, Ulrich tried himself out as a musician and played, among other things, the clarinet and saxophone. He most recently released Oakland Moments: Cello, Voice, Reuniting (Rejoicing), a collaboration with composer Lori Goldston, in 2021.
Mick Wall’s 2012 book “Enter Night” quoted an interview in which Torben Ulrich said about his busy everyday life: “Maybe I played tennis in the afternoon and then went to make music in the evening, and then after that I had to go to the newspaper and write reviews, and After that I might meet up with some friends in the morning and have breakfast, and then I had to go to band practice at lunchtime and play tennis at 3 p.m. Suddenly I hadn’t slept for three or four days.”
