The victim was employed by the Lybover company from Waregem, which is active as a subcontractor on the Tropicana site in the port. The man had to pick up an aerial work platform there. His arm and neck became trapped between a metal gate, a so-called ‘speed gate’ that opens and closes in a few seconds.
The man died on the spot. The Labor Audit Office reports that the victim died of asphyxiation due to serious internal injuries to the larynx. They are now investigating the accident further. Supervision of Welfare at Work also arrived on site, together with a legal physician and a technical advisor appointed by the labor auditor.
The site in the port of Zeebrugge has not yet been released.
