The beach race covers 38 kilometers from Egmond aan Zee to the pier at Velsen Noord and back. Except at this southernmost point of the race, the participants leave the beach at Wijk aan Zee and Castricum where a number of obstacles have to be overcome. Van Breda missed the connection with the head at the straw bales in Castricum.
Illustrious trio
With his victory, Dupont joins two other riders who have also won the largest beach race in Europe three times: Sebastiaan Langeveld (2009, 2014 and 2020) and Jan Weevers (1998, 2001, and 2002). “I’m proud of that,” said 37-year-old Dupont, who raised three fingers in the air at the finish.
Dumoulin
Tom Dumoulin completed the race in 58 minutes and 33 seconds, good for 31st place. With that he conceded the winner in less than two minutes. The former winner of the Tour of Italy has registered for the combined classification. Tomorrow he will start the half marathon as the leader of this classification.
