Fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier has passed away at the age of 78

Famed French fashion photographer Patrick Demarchelier has died at the age of 78.

His family announced his death Thursday via the photographer’s Instagram page. “It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Patrick Demarchelier on March 31, 2022 at the age of 78. He is survived by his wife Mia, three sons Gustaf, Arthur and Victor and three grandchildren.

The photographer is best known for his work for fashion magazines Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. He also regularly photographed Princess Diana and several times for the iconic Pirelli calendar. He has also worked as a photographer for campaigns for brands such as Christian Dior, Ralph Lauren, Chanel and Giorgio Armani.

Patrick Demarchelier is more likely known to the general public through The Devil Wears Prada, as the photographer is mentioned several times in the film.

Demarchelier was born in LeHavre, France. He received his first camera from his stepfather when he was a teenager. He was self-taught and had no official photography training. At 20 he moved to Paris, where he worked for the photographer Hans Feurer. Then he started working for US Vogue and moved to New York.

In 2007 he was promoted by the French Ministry of Culture Officer in the order of arts and letters appointed. He also received the CFDA Founder’s Award that same year.

The announcement of his death on Instagram was accompanied by a flood of condolences. Actress Kate Hudson, model Doutzen Kroes and hairstylist Sam McKnight have sent their condolences.
