60,000 kilograms of celeriac. Farmer Kevin from Alveringem has so much surplus. He now wants to sell them outside the traditional auction. Because the expected price and low demand mean that the juice is not worth the coal, or in his case the celeriac. Kevin Stevens: “The price is far too low. When I take them to the auction: the transport costs are too high, the hours are too expensive. It’s all too expensive. I’m not going to start it, it’s not worth the effort. Besides, there is a spot here and there. It’s a different class. They don’t want it.”

Last week the average sales price for celeriac growers was 28 euro cents per kg, a year ago this was twice as much. To prevent waste, the farmer partners with the food collective Waste Warriors, where you can order Kevin’s celeriac online. Thomas Schiltz – Waste Warriors: “People can do three things: One, they can reserve celeriac themselves to pick up in Roeselare. Two: they can also donate a 15 kg package to the food banks, which costs 6 euros. Third: we also make a product from that celeriac that then goes into the Waste Warriors box against waste. Everyone who registers for it receives our box and thus also participates in the fight to save kilos from the waste mountain.”
