Farewell to Lorenzo Bastelli: his story moved Italy

LLorenzo Bastelli He did not make it. The 14-year-old boy, hit by a Ewing’s sarcoma, whose story moved all of Italy, died on November 22nd. A little over a month ago, his mother had launched an appeal via social media to ask everyone to write him letters and send him photos of animals to keep him company and help him forget the pain for a while. Then it was the mother Federica herself who made the announcement via social media: “Lorenzo has left us”.

Lorenzo Bastelli, a story that moved Italy

Federica Ferri is a mother like many others: she lives in Castel San Pietro Terme, in the province of Bologna, with her husband and children. On October 17, however, with a post shared on Facebook, becomes one of the most famous brave mothers in Italy. She launches an appeal to the entire web community: «You will probably think that I’m a little bit “crazy” she says in my area. The period is a bit difficult and Lorenzo, suffering from Ewing’s sarcoma, lately, also following some complications and physical discomfort (it’s an understatement), is forced to stay at home with little mobility. It is a moment of transition for him, the old classmates are going down different paths and the new ones he knows little about, although he loves studying at the scientific high school and is very good at mathematics, this is a somewhat tiring moment» he wrote.

Then inviting everyone to write to his son. «I was wondering, even sharing this post, for anyone who wants to write a letter like they used to in the old days (he loves to receive letters, he keeps them all aside and reads them often). I would really like him to have the opportunity to interact with as many people as possible. Not only those who already know him but also those who can tell him something about what he does, about what happens outside. He will have a birthday soon, November 10th and it would be a wonderful gift. A letter to him, a drawing, a photo of an animal (he loves animals very much), photographs, would lead him to lighten his thoughts» he added, sharing his home address.

Letters from all over Italy

A post that immediately made the rounds of the web. And for Lawrence all of Italy really mobilized. In fact, letters and photos, messages and videos arrived from all over the country, which mother Federica shared on Facebook, thanking her for the gift given to her son. Until the post we didn’t want to read.

Lorenzo has left us

«He fell asleep peacefully in my armshe has always whispered to me these days ‘mom I love you’. I would like to be able to say that everything was simple but, despite his immense will to live until the end, the situation had gotten a lot worse since Friday” wrote Lorenzo’s mother. Which, once again, she wanted to thank everyone for the love and affection she has received over the past month. “I’ll speak on her behalf, I’m sure Lorenzo lived the last month of his life inside a dream, despite the physical pain, thanks to all those who loved him, thanks to the immense love he felt from an entire world and from us who loved him more than humanly possible. Then, he addressed his last words to his son: «Hug us all my love, but even more we need to feel that you are free to shine as hard as you can».
